Rental property demand 'on the increase'

Demand for rented property in the UK has remained at a record high.

Rental property demand in the UK is on the up, with new figures revealing the volume of viewings for this type of accommodation rose by 17.8 per cent in quarter three when compared with the previous three-month period.

Carried out by Countrywide, the study showed demand for rented housing remains at a record high, with an increase of 10.8 per cent witnessed for the third quarter when sized up against the same spell in 2010.

Margaret Longden, co-managing director at Countrywide Residential Lettings - which has around 200 offices located across the UK and 10,000 properties listed - noted: "Although there are still some slight fluctuations that can be linked to seasonality, we've found that the demand for rental property has remained incredibly high throughout the year."

The industry figure said she expects this trend to continue over the coming months, as increasing numbers appear to be viewing renting as a realistic alternative to buying.
