Renting in the UK 'is priciest in Western Europe'

The cost of renting in the UK is five per cent greater than in France.

Individuals who rent property in the UK are paying more than their counterparts living in the rest of Western Europe.

This is according to new research from Easyroommate, which found flatmates are paying an average of £360 a month - a sum greater than that recorded in France, Italy and Spain.

The investigation revealed those renting a dwelling in the UK are facing costs that are five per cent higher than those reported in France, while the average payments in Britain are 56 per cent above those for Spain.

And while 15 per cent of gross earnings in the UK is spent on rent, just 12 per cent is used for this purpose in the Iberian Peninsula nation.

Jonathan Moore, director of the website - run by DMUK - said: "The combination of unaffordably high house prices with the ongoing lending crunch in the UK is leaving hundreds of thousands of frustrated buyers dependent on rental accommodation."
