Property News - Older UK homes 'increasing in value'

Homes built before World War I are increasing in value, according to new research.

Properties built before 1919 have surged in price over the last 25 years, new research has revealed.

Statistics from Halifax showed pre-World War I homes have seen the biggest positive shift within this time frame, with a rise in value of 461 per cent.

The average house in this range is now worth £188,473, as opposed to £33,619 in 1986.

Popular styles include Victorian-era homes, with high ceilings and fashionable detailing, as well as Edwardian and Georgian options.

Housing economist for the organisation Martin Ellis said the age of a residence can often dictate buyer interest.

The industry figure stated: "Properties from the Victorian or Edwardian era tend to be in higher demand: there are fewer of them, they are often larger, situated in desirable locations and have a popular style."

Halifax, which is a division of Bank of Scotland, also found that London abodes were the most expensive, with the average pre-1919 structure fetching approximately £360,000.
