Thousands of new homes for London

Property News - Thousands of new homes for London

Boris Johnson has announced there will be 55,000 new homes in the capital by 2015.

Thousands of new homes are to be constructed in London over the coming years, the mayor of the city has announced.

Boris Johnson unveiled plans to deliver 55,000 affordable properties to the capital by 2015 - claiming the development could create more than 100,000 job opportunities in the process.

The mayor - who was speaking at the National Housing Federation - described how he will use new housing powers granted to him in the Localism Act to make the vision a reality.

These new buildings will be designed to Mr Johnson's larger space standards, with a considerable number of them constructed to house families.

Mr Johnson said it is crucial for both the economy and the numerous first-time buyers in London that house building is given a helping hand.

He observed: "This strategy offers us a golden opportunity to push on full steam ahead to deliver more affordable homes and create over a hundred thousand much-needed jobs in the process."

The move will build on the mayor's previous delivery of around 40,000 dwellings between 2008 and 2011.

Mr Johnson - who was appointed to the post on May 6th 2008 and was previously the Conservative MP for Henley on Thames - added: "With £3 billion secured from the government, new powers and affordable homes delivery at record levels, we have solid foundations on which to build and cement London’s housing future."

As part of the new strategy, key proposals include a pledge to unlock the Greenwich Peninsula through the building of 2,000 new abodes.

This will help to set up one of the biggest development sites in the UK, as well as bolster employment opportunities in the construction sector and other industries.

For first-time buyers, the initiative will expand the First Steps programme and delve deeper into the 'rent to save' model to enable individuals to acquire equity.
