Property News - 'Marked increase' in FTB mortgage enquiries

FTB mortgage enquiries increased significantly around the turn of the year.

There was a marked increase in the number of first-time buyers (FTBs) seeking mortgage advice around the turn of the year, new research has shown.

According to the latest figures from unbiased.co.uk's Advice Drivers report, January 2012 saw a considerable spike in this activity, accounting for 41 per cent of the total number of searches.

This was markedly higher than the 36 per cent recorded for December 2011 and greater than the 33 per cent reported in November.

In addition, queries regarding re-mortgaging began on an upward path again in January - climbing to 30 per cent from the 29 per cent seen one month earlier.

Karen Barrett, chief executive at unbiased.co.uk, said: "We are seeing an increasing number of high loan to value mortgages return to the market which can only be good news for first time buyers."

The findings come after Rightmove's latest FTB Report found there is a lack of choice at present for individuals hoping to get their foot on the first rung of the property ladder.
