Property News - FMB welcomes 'fair payment' plans

A pledge to tackle unfair payment practices in the construction sector by the SNP has been supported by the FMB.

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has announced its support for plans set out by the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) for a change in payments law should it garner a significant number of seats at the upcoming general election.

Director of FMB Scotland Gordon Nelson said that unfair payment practices in the UK construction industry can pose significant risk to smaller operators and therefore the SNP's pledge to clamp down on this type of activity is extremely welcome.

"Placing prompt payment terms into law could help protect small businesses from predatory practices and also help encourage more of them to engage in public sector procurement," he argued.

Mr Nelson added that as 98 per cent of operators within the Scottish construction sector are classed as either or small or medium-sized enterprises, a focus on fairer payments would be a major boost for the industry in general.
