Property News - Third of Brits 'abandon home improvements'

A significant proportion of UK homes have unfinished DIY projects awaiting completion.

Up to one-third of UK homeowners have embarked on DIY projects and then left their efforts unfinished, a new survey has shown.

Research published by Halifax Home Insurance has shown 38 per cent of property owners do not have the follow-through to complete the work they have begun, while ten per cent have purchased the necessary equipment and materials to do a job but never started it.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Bank holidays are traditionally the time to dig out the tools and indulge in a spot of DIY, but even with the best intentions things can go wrong - which is why checking that you have the right level of buildings and contents cover can provide extra peace of mind."

He added that specialist tasks involving gas, electrical, plumbing or structural work should only be carried out by individuals that have the necessary qualifications and experience to do the job and these are really areas of home improvement that should be left to the professionals.
