Property News - Young adults face DIY disaster risk

One in four young adults have required the services of professionals to put right their DIY disasters around the home.

Up to one-fifth of young adults that have attempted to carry out DIY improvements to their home have required the services of professional tradespeople to come in and fix the damage caused by their efforts.

This is the conclusion of a new poll from Towergate Insurance, which showed that 24 per cent of millennials (adults aged under 24) have used online videos to teach them the skills needed to carry out DIY tasks, but for one in five their efforts have resulted in damage to their home.

A lack of skills when it comes to home improvement can come with a hefty price tag too, as the research also showed that the typical expense of fixing DIY mistakes for this group now stands at £2,500.

Responding to the results, representative for Towergate Drew Wotherspoon commented: "It’s understandable that people are naturally turning to video tutorials for guidance on DIY work.

"However, as our research shows, undertaking ambitious projects with little to no formal training can have serious repercussions financially."
