History
Compton House was given Grade II listed status in September 1988. The gates and the wall surrounding the property are also listed. The house was built in 1893 by the architect Fairfax B. Wade for the Marquis of Northampton using Castle Ashby produced red brick with contrast blue brick ornate patterning and some stone facing on the South elevation. The house is on the H plan in a Jacobean style with two storeys and an attic and a single storey service wing at the rear. The porch on the south front has a shaped, stone-coped gable which bears the date stone 1893 and a shield, under the moulded base of the oriel window, with the initial N for Northampton and the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense, an Anglo-Norman maxim which means, "May he be shamed who thinks badly of it" or "Evil be to him that evil thinks".
