Property News - Lib Dems 'to build 300,000 homes'

A pledge to build hundreds of thousands of new homes in the next parliament has been made by the Lib Dems.

The Liberal Democrats have announced a pledge to build hundreds of thousands of new homes up and down the country should their party be successful at next month's general election.

Deputy prime minister and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said: "Liberal Democrats believe everyone should have the opportunity to have a decent home at a cost they can afford.

"That's why we have increased house building in government but we want to go much further."

Indeed, the party has now pledged to put in place a number of measures that will bolster housing starts by up to an extra 300,000 per year, with proposals including the direct government commissioning of private house building and bringing forward plans for at least ten new garden cities in England.

In addition, the Lib Dems plan to introduce a new help to Rent scheme that could boost the likelihood of young people being able to save a sufficient deposit to buy their first home.
