The Mellish Suite History

John Mellish Esq. who had served as MP for Great Grimsby, was a member of a wealthy family of landowners, bankers and politicians originating from Nottinghamshire. He moved to Hamels in 1796 but died at the hands of highwaymen only two years after his move to Hertfordshire, leaving the mansion to his daughter Catherine Mellish. She set out to create a modernised version of the Brograve house with a more compact and visually coherent structure that would suit the requirements of a wealthy spinster from the Victorian era.
