Sellers Insight

This beautiful country home, which originally dates back to Elizabethan times, enjoys a lovely location on the edge of the delightful Cambridgeshire village of Alconbury Weston. "It was the whole look and feel of the house that attracted me to it when I came across it twelve years ago," says the owner. "The building itself is just so pretty and it has a lovely big quintessentially English country garden, which was perfect for the children when they were young."

"It was practically rebuilt by the previous owners back in the 1990s because it had fallen into a terrible state of disrepair. We've also done bits and pieces here and there so, as well as having every bit of its original character and charm, it's a bright and spacious family home that works brilliantly for modern family life. One of the biggest changes we made was to the kitchen, which is now absolutely gorgeous. We gutted it, opened it up to create a huge kitchen-and-living space and we had beautiful hand-painted shaker style units installed so the overall style is a nice blend of contemporary and traditional. That's actually a theme that runs throughout the house. Alongside features such as the beautiful old beams and inglenook fireplaces – of which we have three – there are more modern touches. I'd say we've struck a really nice balance between old and new."

"For me the garden was a huge selling point, and we also have a small paddock so we have plenty of outside space," continues the owner. "The garden is mainly laid to lawn and edged with a very mature border of shrubs and trees so it's totally hidden from view, and there's also a little orchard which is very productive. It was a wonderful space for the children when they were young, and having the paddock allowed us to keep a variety of animals, including pigs and chickens. It's been an idyllic place to live and it has enabled us to enjoy a really lovely quality of life."

"The kitchen and the sitting room are my favourite rooms. The kitchen is very functional, but at the same time it is a very sociable part of the house, and the sitting room has a very serene atmosphere. I also love the fact that it opens out onto the very pretty patio terrace, so when the sun is shining we can bring the outside in."

"Our immediate surroundings are incredibly peaceful and very picturesque, but despite it being very rural, we've never felt isolated. It takes just six minutes to cycle to the local shop, and Huntingdon is only a fifteen-minute drive from here, and from there I can catch a train and be in London in around an hour.

"Above the double garage we have a room that we use as an office. There's also a small kitchen and shower room up there so with a bit of work it could be possible to turn it into a lovely little self-contained annexe."

"This has been a lovely house to live in and it's been a very happy home," says the owner. "Aesthetically it's very pleasing, it's very spacious and bright and everything is in great condition so the new owners won't need to do a thing. I'm going to miss it when I leave, especially the beautiful garden, but it's time for me to downsize and for a new family to fill the house and enjoy everything that it has to offer."
